Breastfeeding Shells: Friends or Foes of Lactation?

Breastfeeding Shells: Friends or Foes of Lactation?

If you are on the breastfeeding journey, you’ve likely heard about breastfeeding shells. These silicone accessories, shaped like shells, promise to make breastfeeding easier and are often included on first-time moms’ shopping lists. However, an important question arises: do they really help?

Breastfeeding shells, which have a central opening to fit over the nipple, are used by some women in specific situations such as when the breasts are sore or when there is discomfort during breastfeeding. They are also sometimes used by women with flat or inverted nipples in an attempt to help the nipple protrude and facilitate milk flow.

However, it’s crucial to use caution. Indiscriminate use of breastfeeding shells can lead to serious health issues for the mother. The warm, moist environment created by the shells favors the growth of fungi and bacteria, which can result in complications such as mammary candidiasis. In addition, there is an increased risk of mastitis, breast engorgement, and other circulatory problems in the breast area.

Recommended Alternatives to Breastfeeding Shells

Nipple Stimulation:
Gently massage the nipple between the thumb and index finger to encourage it to protrude.

Breast Compression:
Compress the breast especially behind the areola using your fingers in a “V” or “C” shape to help project the nipple.

Cold Compress or Ice:
Briefly touch the nipple with a cold compress or an ice cube to stimulate nipple erection.

Pre-Feeding Expression:
Manually express milk or use a breast pump a few minutes before breastfeeding to help draw the nipple out.

Additionally, seeking guidance from a lactation consultant is highly recommended to ensure a proper latch. For mothers who want to prevent nipple friction against clothing, an effective alternative is to use a soft baby burp cloth rolled into a donut shape and placed around the areola providing a simple and practical solution.
